No 1 Championship Boerewors pizza: two ways #sizzlesizzle

‘Tis the season to be merry, tra la la la la! Since it’s summer and there are a lot of get-togethers with family and friends lined up, braais will not be limited to weekends only! Hurray! And no braai is complete without an ice cold beer and good ol’ boerewors. Am I right or am I right?

We’ve been getting quite adventurous when it comes to braaiing lately and one of our favourites is grilling a pizza on the braai. You can top your pizza with just about anything, but after trying it with No 1 Championship boerewors (braaied by the No 1 Champion braaier: my hubby) it is hard to imagine anything that would come close in comparison. The boerewors is quite fragrant when on the grill, but it has a fairly mild and very pleasing taste – a great choice with the melted mozzarella on the pizza.

With the first pizza we made, we paired the boerewors with caramelized onions and a sprig of fresh rosemary. This combination is mind-blowing – not only was it my favourite, but I’ve been dreaming of this pizza every night since I indulged in it.  The other pizza we made was also my favourite! Oh snap! 🙂 Avocado, mushrooms and fresh paprika compliments the boerewors perfectly without overpowering its subtleties. Championship Boerewors pizza on the braai … do it!

Championship Boerewors pizza with caramelized onions and rosemary

Ingredients:

200 g Championship Boerewors

1 pizza base, store-bought or homemade

1 teaspoon garlic

2 tablespoons tomato and onion relish

3 onions, sliced

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

1 sprig of rosemary

Handful of mozzarella cheese, grated

Method:

1. Braai the Championship Boerewors. Once done, slice the boerewors into disks of about 1cm and set aside.

2. Fry the onions in a splash of olive oil over a medium heat. Once the onions turn translucent, add the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar. Fry for another 5 minutes until the onions become sticky, remove from the heat and set aside.

3. Spread the tomato and onion relish along with the garlic on the base of the pizza.

4. Evenly distribute the caramelized onions and the boerewors on the pizza. Top with mozzarella and place the rosemary on top of the cheese.

5. Put the pizza on the grill. Beware that the fire is not to hot to avoid scorching. Braai for around 10 minutes or until the sides of the pizza start lifting up and the cheese is melted nicely.

6. Serve hot with an ice cold beverage to enjoy the best of summer!
