Old fashioned date and coconut balls

There are times when I think I was born in the wrong decade. I want to live in the 1950s. I want to be a housewife in suburbia with my handsome husband and a gaggle of kids. I want to make these old fashioned date and coconut balls, hoover the living room floor in high heels and dance to Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. I want a mint green kitchen and a red Chevrolet Bel Air.

Frustrated by technology much? You better believe the bold recollection of yesteryear with every bite of these date and coconut balls – you’ll eat them by the handful.

Recipe adapted from Kook en Geniet

250 g butter, melted

500 g dates, chopped

1 egg

Pinch of salt

125 ml sugar

Half a pak of Marie biscuits, crushed

500 g Rice Krispies

200 g coconut

1. Mix the butter with the dates. Whisk the eggs, salt and sugar and add to the dates.

2. Add the biscuits and Rice Krispies with the date mixture.

3. Roll in little balls and cover each one with coconut.

4. Refrigerate the balls for 2 hours and serve with a hot cup of tea.
