You know something is good when it has a day in the year that is specifically dedicated to that dish. Let’s face it, is there anything better than a mouthful of juicy beef patty, cheese, some greens and a soft roll? I think not.
For International Hamburger Day I made mini versions of this comfort food: hot buns with fresh basil, a few slices of avocado, a meaty beef patty and caramelized red onions that is topped with gorgeous rich blue cheese. The strong cheese is complemented so well with the sweetness of the onions, and when paired with the patty and other ingredients it becomes something really special.
These sliders are great for a snack platter, picnics or a dinner party with friends (thanks Wilmie and Marna – that was one for the history books!). It goes great with potato salad or potato fries with a hot sauce.
500 g beef mince
1 onion, grated
6 tablespoons breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon basil
Pinch of cayenne pepper
3 red onions, sliced
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
100 g blue cheese
Handful of fresh basil
2 avocados, sliced
10 mini bread rolls
1. Use your hands and mix the beef mince, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, basil, oregano, cumin and cayenne pepper. Roll into little balls and press them slightly to flatten them into patties. You’ll get about 10 mini patties.
2. Cook the patties on a skillet with a splash of oil or grill them on the braai.
3. Fry the onions in a splash of olive oil over a medium heat. Once the onions turn translucent, add the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar. Fry for another 5 minutes until the onions become sticky, remove from the heat and set aside.
4. To assemble, cut open the bread rolls and place some fresh basil on the bottom half. Put a few slices of avocado on the basil, place the patties on top of that and then top it off with caramelized onions and blue cheese. Close the bun and enjoy with a cold beer!
