Everyone has that one friend who is always happy – smiling and laughing their way through life, and whose energy is totally contagious. Philia Kelnhofer of the food blog Sweet Phi is one of those people, and even though she’s a virtual friend of mine (thank you social media), her vibrancy brightens up my days (is this a Wisconsin thing?).

What’s your favourite savoury ingredient to cook with? Olive oil – it’s such a great and versatile ingredient!
What’s your favourite sweet ingredient to cook with? Chocolate – there’s no comparison to a good quality chocolate in baking. Plus, chocolate can be used to make any number of sweet treats – cookies, brownies, cakes, cupcakes … I could go on 😉
What’s your favourite kitchen tool? My food processor! It’s amazing for chopping and making sauces, it’s a true time saver.
Who is your culinary icon? Good question…I’d have to say Martha Stewart – that woman sure can cook and creates beauty (plus she’s a super savvy business woman!)
What is your favourite recipe book? Any one of Martha Stewart’s books, or there’s one called ‘The All New Good Housekeeping Cookbook’ that is always on sale at used book stores or even on Amazon for a few pennies (literally), but my friend gave it to me once and it has such great recipes and techniques.
What meal or snack is your guilty pleasure? This is a funny one, but my favorite guilty pleasure is pretzels dipped in butter (some good quality European butter). I know it sounds weird, but the salty pretzels and creamy butter go so well together- it’s just delish!
What dish do you want to master but can’t seem to get right? The one thing I’ve wanted to master is ice cream – to me it never tastes as good as when it is store bought and it just makes it not worth the effort – or expense (and I even have an ice cream maker, but it’s just such a hassle and never is quite right)
What was last night’s dinner? Roasted chicken and vegetables – I love roasting a chicken with vegetables at the same time, it’s a meal with minimal prep that doesn’t need any attention while it’s baking away I make this one all the time.
What’s your secret talent? Making complex recipes easy. I love creating simple recipes that don’t take hours to make or that use a million ingredients no one has ever heard of – my Five Ingredient Friday series is a result of that secret talent 😉
