Boland blogger Sam Taylor of Pomegranate Days has been an icon of mine for quite some time. Although she was a professional chef for 18 years, her blog now focuses on family-style food and baked treats that will make you swoon. In 2013 Sam won Pick and Pay’s Freshly Blogged competition – she inspires all who reads her blog and follows her on social media (Sam is also the initiator of the South African Food Blogs Pinterest board).
Sam’s food philosophy, that “life is complicated, but food is simple”, should be adapted by everyone. Take a few minutes and browse through Sam’s recipes, you’ll want to start cooking and baking straightaway.

What’s your favourite savoury ingredient to cook with? Just one? That’s a little tough – butter, garlic, fresh herbs – urrghhh can’t decide – all of them?
What’s your favourite sweet ingredient to cook with? Ooo, that is easy: chocolate!
What’s your favourite kitchen tool? My Kitchen Aid is my BFF.
Who is your culinary icon? Marco Pierre White, I adore him. I made his recipe for spaghetti carbonara on my blog and it is still one of my favourites. He is an amazing chef, but I admit that I swoon over his voice.
What is your favourite recipe book? One does not choose a favourite child. My Larousse is probably the one I could not live without.
What meal or snack is your guilty pleasure? Perfectly grilled aged rump with sliced fresh avocado and skinny fries.
What dish do you want to master but can’t seem to get right? I have yet to make a lemon meringue pie good enough to go on my blog.
What was last night’s dinner? We ate out with our kiddos actually. We went to Pappa Grappa here in the Winelands. They serve the best wood fire pizzas and flamkuchen in the world.
What’s your secret talent? I am an above average Scrabble player.
